Top Tips to BOOST your Broadband!

You’re sat at your desk, twiddling your thumbs, for the past ten minutes you've been glaring at the loading bar whilst waiting for your e-mails to appear. We've all been there… there’s nothing more annoying than slow broadband!

Can you believe that loss of productivity costs the UK economy a massive £11bn a year?!

72% of people in the UK use the internet as part of their job… it’s fair to say we’d be pretty stumped without it!

There are some external factors, that can’t be controlled, which could affect how reliable your broadband is – such as weather conditions and distance from the phone line exchange etc.

However, we have some top tips on how to improve your routers performance and reliability:

Central –

Your router should be placed in a central location for the area it aims to provide to. If your router is tucked up alongside a wall or large objects, this is likely to obstruct your connection. The closer the router is to these large objects, the more it’ll interfere with the signals – giving you a less consistent service.

Antenna –

Most antennas provided with routers are intended to spread the signal around, as they’re multi-directional. The most effective place for your router may not be the most convenient, if there’s various objects surrounding your router then much of the signal is being misdirected and wasted. If you think that obstruction may be a problem then it’s time for a new antenna with a more focused output!

Wi-Fi Repeater –

If you can’t have your router as close as you need it to be, it’d be a good idea to install a wireless repeater. A wireless repeater expands the range of your existing signal without the need to move your router. Wireless repeaters are used by a lot of businesses who say that the repeater has made a big difference to their connectivity!

Wi-Fi Extender –

The Wi-Fi extender increases the Wi-Fi range in your premises, it is a plugged into an electricity socket, and it works by capturing your existing signal and then retransmitting it.

What is VoIP?

Have you ever used an app such as WhatsApp or Facebook messenger to make a phone call? Then you have used VoIP before – a lot of people have used IP telephony without realising!

VoIP stands for ‘voice over internet protocol’ and in simple terms it means voice transmitted over a digital network.

Often referred to as IP telephony, VoIP uses Internet protocols to make enhanced voice communications which offers many benefits, such as greater flexibility, scalability and lower call costs. VoIP allows you to make calls over the internet, those calls are usually free or very low cost. It can take months to install a standard ISDN line – however, a cloud-based system can achieve this almost instantly at a much lower cost.

To make a VoIP call, you need a high speed broadband connection and you can either use a soft-phone on your PC/laptop or a purpose built VoIP telephone. Using a VoIP service allows you to call anyone, anywhere on any type of network – the call quality of a VoIP phone will sound identical to an ordinary telephone call, the voice quality is crisp and clear.

VoIP allows your business to be more flexible. If you travel often, VoIP would be great for you – your telephone service can be used wherever you travel as long as you have access to a high speed internet connection, your computer doesn't have to be turned on to make the calls - however, your broadband needs to be active.

Are you in a super-fast area?

Everyone is raving about lightning fast broadband speeds and the benefits it has! Fibre broadband opens new opportunities for your business, you can easily connect with your customers and it can help your business to develop and grow as you have a reliable, consistent connection.

Fibre-optics are the latest advancement in enabling super-fast broadband for the UK. The name ‘fibre-optic’ comes from the use of plastic or glass cables which are situated under the ground, these cables allow data to travel much faster than they do along the traditional copper cables.

Unfortunately, fibre isn't available in the whole of the UK yet – the majority of large towns and cities now have access to the new technology but some areas aren't covered!

There’s now a quick and easy way to find out if you’re in a super-fast area by clicking this link and simply entering your postcode or telephone number: https://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker

Apple launches iPhone 6s Smart Battery Case

Apple has launched their first battery case priced at £79.00, the Apple iPhone 6s Smart Battery is available in two colours, charcoal grey or white and is well-suited for the iPhone 6 or 6s. Apple claims that their charger case can increase battery life by up to 25 hours.

For quite some time charger cases have been available via online marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay but this is Apple’s first take on the product itself. Third-party cases range from around £8-£20 for a standard case which will charge your iPhone from 0-100 and then it would need to be charged at the plug socket to be used again.

Apples’ overview of the case:

“The Smart Battery Case is engineered specifically for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6, to give you even longer battery life and protection. The soft microfibre lining on the inside helps protect your iPhone, while the soft elastomer hinge design makes it easy to put the case on and take it off again. On the outside, the silky, soft-touch finish of the silicone exterior feels great in your hand.”

The 6s Smart Battery Case is a silicone case with a prominence on the back where the extra battery supply is. Consumers are unimpressed with its ‘hump’ – linking it to the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the case is said to add considerable bulk to the iPhone 6s – which is the thinnest iPhone yet.

Here is a picture of the iPhone 6s with the Smart Battery Case on the phone – found on the Apple Website

What do you think of Apple's new battery case? Will you be buying one any time soon?
